Townshend Acts are all but repealed in England.
April 12, 1770
Parliament repeals all but the Tea Act, which is maintained as symbol of the “supremacy of Parliament” and a declaration of its right “to govern the colonies.” The repeal motion had been proposed by Lord North on March 5, 1770, the day of the Boston Massacre. While the Townshend Acts were in effect, the British government is reputed to have collected 21,000 pounds in tax levies, but lost an estimated 1.7 million pounds in trade.
